The NWO-division of WOTRO Science for Global Development invites applications for the programme Security & Rule of Law in Fragile and Conflict-Affected Settings. This programme provides grants for research that contributes to new knowledge and insights on improvement of security and rule of law policies and interventions in specific fragile and conflict affected Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). It consists of two seperate funding instruments: Strategic Research Fund and Applied Research Fund.

• The Strategic Research Fund (SRF): provides funding for strategic research that investigates the correlation between employment and stability in a specific set of fragile or conflict affected Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs), or for research into the key drivers and challenges determining employment strategies of the private sector in these countries. The aim is to enhance the academic basis and underlying assumptions of intervention logic and policy theories on employment for stability, in order to enhance the effectiveness of policies and interventions for stability in the targeted fragile and conflict affected countries. Deadline for submitting preliminary proposals is May 12, 2014. The maximum budget of the call is € 2,400,000. Funding is up to € 443,000 per project for a maximum duration of 36 months. The consortium should consist of at least two research organisations from across the globe, including one from an LMIC.

• The Applied Research Fund (ARF): provides funding for research that contributes to innovations for people-centered and context sensitive rule of law reform programmes in fragile and conflict affected low and middle income countries (LMICs). The aim is to support research based innovation that is grounded in the local political and economical context. The innovations should contribute to a more people-centred and conflict-sensitive approach for rule of law reform programming in fragile environments. Deadline for submitting a Letter of Intent is April 11, 2014. The maximum budget is € 2,500,000. Funding is up to € 310,000 per project for a maximum duration of 24 months.
