Call for NWO Open Competition – SSH for free, curiosity-driven research published

NWO has published the previously announced call for proposals 'NWO Open Competition Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) non-programmed, curiosity-driven research'. Deadline for submitting pre-proposals is September 25, 2018. The budget available is € 16.55 million. Researchers will be able to submit proposals without any thematic limitations for projects that primarily have a social sciences or humanities research question and hypothesis.

With the new funding instrument the SSH domain offers researchers the opportunity to do research on a subject of their own choosing without any thematic limitations. The Open Competition is aimed at research projects with primarily social sciences- or humanities-related research questions and problem statements.

Researchers can apply for funding for small and large research grants, for individual projects or research groups. Funding is up to € 750,000. The research project can have a disciplinary, interdisciplinary or cross domain character and may focus on international collaboration between researchers and/or research groups.

The new instrument SSH is the successor of all current funding instruments of the open competition for the Social Sciences and Humanities. With the introduction the following NWO-funding instruments will be discontinued:

  • Internationalisation in the Humanities;
  • Investment Grant NWO Medium;
  • Open Research Area (ORA);
  • Research talent (OT);
  • Free Competition Humanities.

After 2020 also the PhDs in the Humanities will be integrated into the Open Competition for the Social Sciences and Humanities.
