'Challenges in malaria research', Basel, Switzerland

Event date:
2012-10-10 An event entitled 'Challenges in malaria research' will take place from 10 to 12 October 2012 in Basel, Switzerland.

Approximately half of the world's population is at risk of malaria. Most malaria cases and deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. However, Asia, Latin America, and to a lesser extent the Middle East and parts of Europe, are also affected. Key interventions to control malaria include: prompt and effective treatment with artemisinin-based combination therapies; use of insecticidal nets by people at risk; and indoor residual spraying with insecticide to control the vector mosquitoes.

Resistance to antimalarial medicines is a recurring problem and there are currently no licensed vaccines against malaria or any other human parasite. The event will discuss research insights into malaria elimination, including social science and policies; Artemisinin resistance; new drugs; vaccines; diagnostic challenges and vector controls. It will also bring together leading malaria researchers to review current progress and to chart future challenges.
