'Biodiversity in the Balance: Causes and Consequences', Heidelberg, Germany
2012-11-09 A conference entitled "Biodiversity in the Balance: Causes and Consequences" will take place from 9 to 10 November 2012 in Heidelberg, Germany.
The diversity of the living world and the forces and processes that gave birth to so many species have long been a topic of interest for science, with many questions still remaining. What happens if the dynamics that allow interacting species to coexist and influence the stability of an ecosystem get thrown off balance? What evidence is there to suggest that biodiversity is decreasing on a global scale? What methods and new tools do scientists currently employ to map and assess biodiversity both locally and globally? What are the stakes for human health, economic prosperity and long-term survival? What is the state of affairs in international efforts to counter further losses of biodiversity?
These questions, among others, will be the focus of the conference. Important areas of life science research will be introduced to all, while reflection on their implications will be promoted. The conference is also hoped to facilitate a broad dialogue between biologists, behavioral and social scientists, students of all disciplines, and members of the public.
