Leprosy Research Initiative - Call for proposals 2019
The LepÂrosy Research IniÂtiaÂtive (LRI) invites proposals for funding commencing in 2019. Deadline for submitting applications is February 28, 2018. LRI funds research with a focus on leprosy - including research applications combining leprosy with other neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) or other diseases that share cross-cutting issues with leprosy. The duration of proposals should not exceed four years. There is no funding ceiling for the current call.
By way of guidance: projects LRI has funded in the past years had an average annual amount of € 30,000 (ranging from € 10,000 to € 75,000) – although in exceptional cases higher annual budgets have been accepted.
The research priorities are:
- Early detection: Promote and enable early detection of leprosy;
- Nerve function impairment and reactions: Promote prevention, early detection and effective treatment of nerve function impairment (NFI) and reactions;
- Inclusion: Promote inclusion of persons affected by leprosy in society;
- Prevention of diability: Improve the coverage of prevention of disability activities and their integration in national programmes and integrated wound and limb care programmes;
- Interrupt transmission: Test methods and tools to interrupt the transmission and incidence of leprosy, including increasing the coverage of effective contact management and chemoprophylaxis.
The Leprosy Research Initiative is a combined venture of the Netherlands Leprosy Relief (NLR, Leprastichting), American Leprosy Missions (ALM), German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Relief Association (GLRA), effect:hope (The Leprosy Mission Canada) and The Leprosy Mission International (TLMI). Guided by an allied policy with clearly defined research priorities, the partners have established a joint fund to support leprosy research and a mechanism to access external funding. The Leprosy Mission Ireland (TLM Ireland) is supporting the running cost of the LRI. The Austrian Leprosy Relief Association (ALRA) funds a research grant.
