Fifth International Workshop on Massively Multiuser Virtual Environments, Munich, Germany

Event date:
2012-10-08 The Fifth International Workshop on Massively Multiuser Virtual Environments will take place from 8 to 9 October 2012 in Munich, Germany.

Massively multiuser virtual environment (MMVE) systems are spatial simulations that provide real-time human interactions among many users at the same time. MMVEs have experienced significant growth in recent years in the form of massively multiplayer online games. The technical aspect of designing, developing, and deploying these applications is highly interdisciplinary and involves experts from many domains.

The workshop will be a forum for both academic researchers and industry developers to discuss the current and future research topics. Topics are set to include:
- scalability, the ability to handle at least thousands of concurrent users, interacting via Internet;
- interactivity, how to provide responsive, near real time interactions despite latency and jitter;
- consistency, providing consistent views for users, despite the inherent delay in state updates;
- persistence, the ability to save and access the world states despite disconnections and failures;
- security and privacy, distributed algorithms that allow secure interactions and privacy guarantees;
- interoperability, integration of multiple systems or providers with common protocols or clients;
- bandwidth restricted (mobile) devices;
- self-organising architectures, load balancing and fault tolerance;
- content streaming, voice communication and 3D content streaming; - implementation issues.
