Competition Art of Neuroscience 2018 open for submission

The Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (NIN), part of of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) invites proposals for the Art of Neuroscience competition for 2018, an international competition open to scientists and artists worldwide. Deadline for submitting applications is June 4, 2018. NIN is looking for striking visualisations related to the field of Neuroscience in its broadest sense. The winner is awarded with € 1,000.

Four runners up will be selected and awarded a € 250 prize.

Submissions can include images or videos representing actual neural data or tissue, but also more abstract visualisations, sculptures or even musical scores that are in some way related to concepts about nervous tissue, the brain or cognition.

Art of Neuroscience was born in 2011 at the NIN, as a competition for inspiring and provocative imagery from neuroscience labs. The goal has been to make the research from neuroscience labs more tangible, but also aims for scientists to evaluate their own work from a different perspective. In recent years, artists are invited to also submit work inspired by the brain to further stimulate the cross-over between neuroscience and art. Seminars have been hosted to foster discussions between artists and neuroscientists covering the intelligence of the hand, art as a uniquely human form of expression, the neural substrates of aesthetic judgement, memory as depicted in literature, games as tools to analyse data or for neural-feedback purposes and many other cross-modal topics touching upon art and neuroscience.
