Indology - Gonda Fund for projects, publications, fellows and PhDs 2019

The J. Gonda Fund Foundation, part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) invites applications for its projects, publications, fellowships and PhDs. Upcoming deadline of submissions is April 1, 2019. The Gonda Fund supports the scholarly study of Sanskrit, other Indian languages and literatures, and Indian cultural history.

The Gonda Fund offers three kinds of applications:

  • Funding for a project or publication in Indology of researchers or scientific publishers;
  • Gonda Fellowship to promising young Indologists at post-doctorate level, enabling them to stay at the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) in Leiden, the Netherlands;
  • Grants to promising PhD students in the Netherlands for a special research project, a working visit abroad, or another activity.

Funding for a project or publication in Indology differs per project. The grant for a Gonda Fellow amounts to € 2,000 per month. He or she can also claim the travelling expenses for a roundtrip to the Netherlands at the start and end of the fellowship (economy class ticket) from the Gonda Foundation. The grant for a Gonda PhD student is usually between € 3,000 and € 10,000. The grant cannot be used to cover salaries.

Since 1992, the Gonda Fund has funded projects, fellowships and scholarly publications and re-issues of existing works. It also organises and publishes the annual Gonda Lecture. The Foundation's assets consist of the estate of Indologist Jan Gonda, who was a member of the Academy.
