NWO publishes call on improving seed systems in Asia and Sub-Sahara Africa

Together with CGIAR and the Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP), NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development, has published a call for proposals on generating insights that contribute to improving seed systems (including both plant and animal seed stock) in Asia and Sub-Sahara Africa. Deadline for submitting a pre-proposal is April 12, 2018. The budget available is € 8.5 million. The total funding of one project must be between € 600,000 and € 1,000,000 for a period of 36 months.

The call is open for consortia consisting of a research institution from the Netherlands and a CGIAR Research Programme or platform in collaboration with other organisations (both public and private) in the Netherlands and/or the focus countries. Besides the collaboration with the CGIAR and F&BKP, the call is implemented with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (MoFA and LNV).

The specific objectives of this call, that focuses on twelve target countries, are:

  • To gain insights in how to increase the contribution of high-quality ‘seed’ (i.e. seed and propagation materials for crops, livestock and fish) in improving smallholder farmers’ food and income security;
  • To identify and test how to contribute to improving availability and access of high-quality ‘seed’ for smallholder and family farms, especially sooner and at a larger scale than in current practice;
  • To identify and test how to make value chains for private and public seed and animal seed stock more efficient, sustainable and anchored in a supportive enabling environment;
  • To strengthen cooperation among CGIAR researchers affiliated to CGIAR Research Programmes and/or Platforms, Dutch researchers and relevant (local) public and private partners.

The twelve countries are: In Africa: Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Mozambique, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda; and in Asia: Bangladesh, India and Vietnam.

The deadline for submitting full proposals is August 30, 2018.
