Where cattle feed and algorithms meet

Rebekka Lennings & Sijmen Verveer | 30-09-2019

ENGIE, Nirvention, CWI and Voergroep Zuid are jointly developing an innovation that can achieve significant energy savings in animal feed production lines.

Feed industry
To feed all our cattle (pigs, cows, sheep, goats and horses), a very extensive compound feed industry has been created in our country, in which 13.5 million tons of feed per year is produced according to the individual recipe of each farmer. The feed is made in the form of dried and compressed pellets. To meet strict quality requirements, a precise production process must be followed for different animal species on the same production line.

Higher quality with less energy consumption
ENGIE, Nirvention, CWI and Voergroep Zuid work together to better control the product quality of the cattle feed and at the same time realize a considerable energy saving in the production process. An optimal batch production process is created by measuring the mixture distribution and moisture content in-line with near infrared light and combining the resulting measurement data with intelligent algorithms with the process flows. In this way, the drying time during the production process can be optimally and dynamically optimized, and the planning and energy consumption can be adjusted automatically based on current information.
